Prophets before exile of 722

THE PROPHETS OF ISRAEL AND JUDAH BEFORE THE ASSYRIAN EXILE OF 722/1 B.C.

This section deals with those prophets whose activity occurred during the period of the united kingdom, that is to say, when Israel was still a single political unit, which was the case until after the death of Solomon, when the kingdom fell prey to political in-fighting and divided into a northern kingdom (known as Israel) and a southern kingdom (called Judah, or Judea). It also includes the prophets who were active during the time of the divided kingdoms (the prophets then were mainly from Judah), up to the time that the northern kingdom was conquered by the Assyrians and carried off into captivity in regions which correspond – on today’s map – to areas of northern Syria, southern Turkey, northern Iraq and northern Iran. That Assyrian captivity occurred about 722/721 BC.
